Weekend in Maastricht from Luxembourg
We were in the mood for something a little different, charming, laid-back, but still with culture, good coffee, and walkable streets. Maastricht kept popping up in conversations with Dutch friends, so we went for it. And wow, it delivered! Riverside strolls, secret bookshops in old churches, and a mix of Dutch, Belgian, and French vibes in every corner.

Introduction
In the very bottom tip of the Netherlands, Maastricht is one of the easiest and most underrated escapes from Luxembourg. It’s about 2.5 hours by car and feels worlds away. It’s Dutch, yes, but also very different from Amsterdam: no canals here, but instead a river that cuts through medieval bridges, Roman ruins, cozy squares, and even vineyards! The best part? It’s all incredibly compact. You can see a lot in 3 days without rushing. Here's our no-stress guide built for wandering, museum-visiting, and just enjoying the good life.
Day 1 Itinerary

Morning
We left Luxembourg around 8:00 AM and rolled into Maastricht just before 11. First stop: a strong coffee and croissant at Coffeelovers Plein 1992, right on the river. From there, we crossed the iconic St. Servatius Bridge, the oldest in the Netherlands, into the historic center.

Then we visited the Basilica of Saint Servatius. It’s Romanesque, peaceful, and a nice cool stop when the city heats up.

Lunch
Lunch was simple but delicious at Stadsbrouwerij Maastricht, a riverside brewery where we had a local beer and open sandwich while planning our days ahead.

Afternoon
The real gem of the day? Boekhandel Dominicanen a bookstore inside a 13th-century church. It’s not just beautiful, it’s peaceful, too. We spent way longer than planned flipping through books and sipping espresso in the café.

Evening
We walked to Wyck, the trendy neighborhood across the bridge. It's full of boutiques, concept stores, and indie wine bars. We ended the evening at a local restaurant for a cozy dinner. Not fancy, but warm and welcoming, with great service and seasonal dishes.

Hidden Gems

Bookstore Dominicanen – A bookstore in a church that feels like a cathedral for book lovers.

Apostelhoeve Vineyard – A serene spot just outside the city where you can taste really good Dutch wine.

St. Pietersberg Nature Reserve – Peaceful hikes with cliff views, goats, and zero crowds.

How to Arrive

By car: The easiest option. Maastricht is just over 2.5 hours from Luxembourg City via the A6 and E25. Parking is available at Q-Park garages all around the city, especially handy near Wyck or Stadspark.

By train: There’s no direct train, but it’s doable via Liège. From Luxembourg City to Liège-Guillemins (1h 50m) then a local train to Maastricht (30 mins). Total: around 2h 30m if well-timed.

By bus: Flixbus and BlaBlaCar offer options to Maastricht (usually via Liège). It’s cheaper but less frequent: very good option if you’re flexible.

Once in Maastricht, everything is walkable. No car needed 🙂

What locals do

Locals in Maastricht know how to enjoy life. They spend their Sundays wandering through Stadspark, picking up lunch at the weekend market, and reading in cafés that spill out onto quiet city squares.

A local tip: join them on the riverbank near Hoge Brug around sunset. People gather with a drink and just... hang out. It’s the most relaxed crowd we’ve seen in a while!

They also love “terrassen” – sitting outside with a coffee or beer, even in cool weather. We followed their lead and made café stops part of our daily rhythm.

And don’t miss out on the local tart: Limburgse vlaai. Every bakery sells it, but the lines outside Bisschopsmolen tell you everything you need to know.
